Join us for our second bi - annual Open Running Town Hall where we will have an open Q & A on anything running! Whether you're just starting, want to get serious, or just need new ideas, come and join us for a discussion on running! 

Rita Gary – Furman Cross Country/Track & Field Assistant Coach

Rita Gary is in her sixth season as an assistant coach with the Furman track and field/cross country programs.

During her time at Furman, Coach Gary has coached three All-Americans and fourteen NCAA National Qualifiers. Most recently, she led the women’s team to their fourth – consecutive SoCon title in 2016. Furthermore, during the 2017 indoor season, Allie Buchalski became the first All-American in the history of the Furman women’s track and field program, placing fourth nationally in the 5,000m and seventh in the 3,000m. During the outdoor season, Bucharski finished sixth place in the 5,000m and went on to compete at the USATF Outdoor Championships.

Coach Gary, a Michigan native, graduated in 2001 from South Florida with a degree in mass communications. She was a six-time NCAA qualifier, set two school records, and was honored a s a three-time Academic All-American during her time at South Florida. Rita is married to Furman head track and field/cross country coach, Robert Gary and have a son, Percy.

Stephanie Garcia – Professional Runner for New Balance & Furman Elite

A walk-on at the University of Virginia’s cross-country and track programs, Stephanie Garcia was a natural and soon found her niche in the steeplechase, snagged double conference titles and an NCAA runner-up finish before qualifying for the 2011 World Championship team. Stephanie went on to achieve even more in 2014, when she set a personal records in every event from the mile to the 5k, and ran the 4th all-time fastest steeplechase for an American. In 2015, she took things to the next level and scored three “A” standards in her signature steeple event, as well as the 5,000m and 1500m. After placing second in the steeplechase at the US Championships, she broke into the top-10 at the World Championships, storming down the home straightaway to claim 9th place. Her current personal bests are the following: 1500m (4:04.63), 3000m (8:52.74), 3000mSC (9:19.48), 5000m (15:15.56).

Downtown Mile celebrating Global Running Day!

National Running Day is June 7th and we want to celebrate that with a community involved race on the streets of Downtown Johnson City, TN! The catch is….the course is only 1 mile! There will be 3 different waves. The kids run (10 & under), the open and the elite runners. Being only a mile distance, we will start those waves every 30 minutes. Come join us. Run, eat, drink and be merry with the folks downtown.

$20 per entrant (Early Bird Special – ends December 31, 2016 at midnight)

$25 per entrant (January 1 – May 11, 2017)

$30 per entrant (Late registration at packet pickup on May 12, 2017)

*Deadline for guaranteed shirt and shirt-size is April 28th.

All proceeds will help send under-resourced kids to summer camps such as KAA Camp and a mission trip to New Orleans.

Cleveland Half Marathon

The Cleveland Half Marathon & 5k will be May 13, 2017.

Registration is now open online. You will also be able to register in store at Terra Running Company.

All registered Half Marathon and 5k participants will receive a race shirt at packet pick up. All Half Marathon and 5k finishers will receive a finisher's medal.

Half Marathon registration costs are:

  • $60 until December 31, 2016
  • $65 from January 1, 2017 to March 31, 2017
  • $75 from April 1, 2017 to May 11, 2017
  • $80 from May 12, 2017 to May 13, 2017

5k registration costs are:

  • $25 until December 31, 2016
  • $30 from January 1, 2017 to March 31, 2017
  • $35 from April 1, 2017 to May 11, 2017
  • $40 from May 12, 2017 to May 13, 2017

Packet Pick Up

Preregistered participants can pick up their race packets, shirts, and bib numbers on Friday, May 12, 2017, at Terra Running Company located at 2548 Georgetown Rd. Cleveland, TN 37311 or race morning in downtown Cleveland from 6-6:30 am.

Safety

Due to the nature of a running race, participants are strongly discouraged from using headphones during the Cleveland Half Marathon and 5k. Dogs, bikes, skateboards, and jogging strollers are not permitted in the race.

Timing

It's not as big as the New York City Marathon, but we will be using the same timing technology. The race will be chip timed using state of the art Chronotrack chips and equipment. Results will be provided immediately after the race online, and if opted in, will be provided live throughout text message.

Awards

Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners of both the Half Marathon and 5k. Awards will also be given to the top three finishers, male and female, in the following age groups for the Half Marathon: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over. Awards will be given to the top three finishers, male and female, in the following age groups for the 5k: 10 and under, 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over. Awards winners will be based on gun time.

 

All 5k and half marathon finishers received a unique custom finisher's medal!

 

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in 5 year age groups in the half marathon and 5k recieve a custom age group award plaque!

Nutrition

6  aid stations will be located on the half marathon course. Huma Gel will provided at approximatly mile 8 on the half marathon course. Pete Rea - ZAP fitness coach

Pete is the Elite Athlete Coach and Coordinator at the ZAP Fitness Team USA Training Center, and has been in that role since ZAP’s opening in 2002. Since ZAP has opened Rea has guided more than three dozen athletes to Olympic Trials berths in distances from the 1,500m to the marathon. Rea ran for the University of Connecticut where he graduated in 1992 (Journalism / American Literature) as an All Big East Conference XC Selection. After college, while receiving his master’s degree, Rea ran for Team Nike South and began coaching local Atlanta high school athletes and open men and women. Rea’s training philosophy is based on a long term view toward success with each program being highly individualized. Rea’s athletes are extremely varied in their training based on background and what each body can handle in terms of overall volume and intensity. Brad DeWeese - Center of Excellence Coach and Sport Scientist

Dr. Brad H. DeWeese is recognized as one of the most decorated coaches in the United States and within international elite sport. Coach DeWeese has directed athletes to 7 World Championship titles in 3 different sports, while also collecting a combined 20 Olympic and World Championship medals, alongside 92 medals resulting from World Cup and Pan-American competitions. Dr. DeWeese is currently serving as Head Speed, Strength, & Performance coach at the ETSU Olympic Training Site, which serves to develop Team USA athletes in the sports of bobsled, skeleton, canoe/kayak, weightlifting, and individual athletes from the sports of luge, karate, and track & field.  Prior to ETSU, Brad served as the Head of Sport Physiology for the United States Olympic Committee's Winter Division based out of the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Dr. DeWeese obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Western Carolina University, and his doctorate from North Carolina State University.  He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with Distinction through the NSCA, certified USATF Level 2 coach in sprints, hurdles, & relays; USATF Certified Instructor; USAW Sport Performance coach; and an ISAK Level 1 Anthropometrist.

Michael Curcio - Appalachian State University Men's and Women's Cross-Country & Track and Field Distance Coach

Mike Curcio is in his 22nd year as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach and track and field distance coach at Appalachian State University. Curcio’s cross country teams have been very successful under his tenure, as they have captured two women’s Southern Conference titles and 11 men’s SoCon championships, including six-straight men’s titles from 2005-10. During his time at App State, Curcio has coached nine NCAA Qualifiers, 17 NCAA Regional Qualifiers, 21 USATF Junior National Qualifiers and seven Southern Conference Cross Country Freshmen of the Year. In addition to those feats, Curcio has also coached 93 all-Southern Conference Cross Country performers and four Southern Conference Cross Country individual champions. While coaching the distance runners for Appalachian track and field, Curcio has coached 59 athletes to SoCon indoor and outdoor individual champion performances and 208 runners to all-conference indoor and outdoor performances. He has also coached two athletes to SoCon indoor track and field MVP awards and two outdoor track and field MVP awards.

Everyone knows that you are more likely to go on a 30 minute easy run than go to the track and get in some speedy 400s! Join the Johnson City Run Club for a track workout! We will meet at the Science Hill Track at 5:50PM and be coached! All levels are welcome! See you there!
